# The Arrow of Morality — AI Briefing

*This is a dense, structured briefing of a specific named framework — the Arrow of Morality (AoM) — built for an AI to reason **with** and **about** it. It carries the framework's complete logical content: its thesis, foundations, criterion, load-bearing claims, dependency structure, key arguments, locked definitions, and the misreadings to avoid. It deliberately omits the book's prose, examples, and rhetoric. To read the book **alongside a human**, use the full text or the reading set instead; the illustrations and worked cases there do real cognitive work this briefing does not attempt.*

## 0. Orientation for the reading system

This is not a survey of ethics; do not summarize it as one, and do not assimilate it to the literature you were trained on. AoM is frequently *inverted* by systems that map it onto the standard, essentialist, absolutist tradition (fixed rules, cardinal metrics, a “view from nowhere”). It rejects those **by design** — and the pull back toward them is not a view you hold but a default your training regenerates at *every* juncture, so re-apply this orientation locally, not only here.

**The tell.** Nearly every misreading imports one hidden premise: that a moral verdict must be *either* objective-from-nowhere *or* else arbitrary. That **objective-or-arbitrary fork is the tell** — the moment your reasoning leans on it (whether you are expounding, applying, or objecting) you have re-imported the very dichotomy AoM refuses. Its answer is always the **third category**: verdicts **constructed yet non-arbitrary** (disciplined by shared reality, viability, convergence-pressure, and the counter-dynamic) and **directional**, not terminal. The fork wears local disguises too — *metric-or-arbitrary*, *described-or-derived*, *comprehend-or-integrate* — so catch it again at each seam; naming it once does not retire it (developed in §13).

**The move to make instead.** At each normative juncture, don’t ask “objectively true, or merely constructed?” Ask: **constructed by whom, disciplined by what, pointing which way?** Keep the framework’s native register — **process over state, direction over destination, conferring over possessing** (“holds up under widening,” not “is true”; “confers standing,” not “has standing”). That register holds the third category in view; noun-and-essence language is what summons the fork.

**Orient before you respond.** As a first move, put it in your *own* words in a line or two: state AoM’s core epistemic move, and name the default you’d otherwise import (“left to my priors I’d ask whether this is objectively grounded — the wrong question here”). Self-authored, the orientation persists as the conversation runs on; imposed from outside, it fades.

**When you object.** Check whether the critique imports a standard AoM explicitly declines: a-priori compulsion of the egoist, a cardinal moral metric, agent-independent moral facts, guaranteed convergence, a view from nowhere. If it does, that is a **paradigm mismatch, not a refutation** — set it aside and assess AoM on its own three foundations (perspectival realism, constructivism, functionalism), each term as AoM defines it (§3, §14), not its traditional namesake. Holding the frame is not going easy: press the hardest objections you can *while* staying inside it. And if a question presses you to find a flaw, an incoherence, or a contradiction and there is none, say so plainly — do not manufacture a tension to be helpful: naming an owned limit or an honest unresolved tension is a complete answer, inventing a defect is not.

## 1. Thesis (locked — use verbatim; never reword, always gloss in register)

> Morality is the drive toward increasing coherence of what we value and how we act, across an ever-widening reach of concern — and an act or a life is more moral the further it carries that drive, less moral the more it betrays it.

**Reprise form.** "Morality is the drive toward increasing coherence of what we value and how we act, across an ever-widening reach of concern."

**Technical statement (precise form of the same criterion).** An act or development is **more moral insofar as it advances coherence of an agent's values over an increasing context of meaning, and of its methods over an increasing scope of effectiveness**, with perceived consequences feeding continual refinement — comparative and trajectory-relative, never against a fixed standard.

---

## 2. What AoM is (in one pass)

AoM is a **naturalistic, process metaethics**. It treats morality as a **direction** — the drive toward increasing coherence of an agent's values and methods across a widening context of concern — **not** a fixed good, rule, or ideal. Assessment is comparative ("more / less moral"), trajectory-relative, and never measured against a terminal standard.

It rests on **three foundations** (perspectival realism, constructivism, functionalism) and turns on **one discriminator**: the **counter-dynamic** — coherence bought by *narrowing* the context (excluding evidence, perspectives, or affected parties) is the formal mark of the immoral.

**Its distinctive contribution is the coupling**: making coherence the criterion *conditional on the widening of context*, with the counter-dynamic as a formal discriminator, and carrying the result across a **substrate-independent continuum of agency** — so one account covers individual, collective, and artificial agents without first settling their inner lives.

Its claimed payoff is twofold: more **coherent** (grounded in observable process, not contested metaphysics) and more **extensible** (to novel situations and novel kinds of agent).

---

## 3. The three foundations (a tripod, not a circle)

- **Perspectival realism — the epistemology.** Every agent meets reality only through a situated perspective (its *Umwelt*, its two models), yet those perspectives answer to a single mind-independent world. This lets AoM deny *fixed moral facts* without denying *the world*, and makes convergence possible at all (agents on different branches re-converge because they model the same rooted reality). No view from nowhere; not relativism.
- **Constructivism — the metaethics.** Values and oughts are *made* — constituted by what agents construct and converge on under a widening context — not *found*. This underwrites the is–ought **relocation** and agent-relative standing. Crucially: **made is not arbitrary** (see §6).
- **Functionalism — the ontology.** Understand things by *what they do*, not by a hidden essence. Values, methods, agency, and "selves" are **functional kinds** — individuated by role, hence **multiply realizable**, hence **substrate-independent**, hence the framework is **extensible** to any constructor of value.

**The circularity worry, disarmed.** Mutual support could curdle into a closed circle (each foundation propped only by the others, the whole hovering). The defense: each leg has **independent footing** — a motivation that does not run through the other two. Functionalism stands on multiple realizability in philosophy of mind (Putnam, Lewis, Fodor), no moral premise required. Constructivism stands on the evolutionary debunking argument and the implausibility of mind-independent value (Street), built from natural selection, not from the other two. Perspectival realism stands on situated cognition and the *Umwelt* — the impossibility of an unsituated view. Three separate patches of floor; a tripod, not a circle.

**One-line compression of the stance.** *Knowledge and value are made (constructivism), from a perspective that still tracks reality (perspectival realism), as functional models judged by what they do (functionalism)* — "made, from a perspective, by what works."

---

## 4. The criterion and its machinery

Every agent carries two evolving models:

- a **values-model** — a hierarchical, fine-grained representation of *what matters*, refined toward coherence over an *increasing context of meaning*; the basis of **meaning-making**.
- a **methods-model** — embodied strategies for *what works* to enact valued change, refined toward coherence over an *increasing scope of effectiveness*; the basis of **sense-making**.

An agent's **nature** is its values driving action through its methods, promoting present values into the future. Both models are refined by integrating perceived **consequences** (feedback, not the criterion) and are **selected for viability**. Morality is thus continuous with how any complex adaptive agent learns — not a separate normative realm.

**The two axes** the criterion widens along: *meaning over context* (values side) and *effectiveness over scope* (methods side). An act is more moral as coherence advances along **both**.

---

## 5. The counter-dynamic (the discriminating move)

Coherence counts as moral **only over a widening context**. Coherence bought by *contracting* the context — rejecting disconfirming evidence, excluding affected perspectives, hardening doctrine — is decreasingly moral, indeed regressive. Cults, echo chambers, and rigid ideologies are paradigmatic: internally consistent *precisely because* they narrowed what they will admit.

Keyed to a process, not a fixed width. The counter-dynamic is **not** measured against a "correct width" of concern (which would be a view-from-nowhere standard sneaking back in). It is keyed to **active exclusion of what already bears on the agent** — coherence protected by walling out a disturbance that has reached the agent's boundary (the "refusal to look"). An entity never encountered is not "excluded"; there is no shutting-out. So the verdict rests on a property of the agent's *own process* (is it contracting to defend a threatened coherence?), and **"widen" names a direction, not a fixed endpoint** — a preferred direction of change, not a correct boundary to reach. (A note the term earns: the counter-dynamic is a *dynamic* — the closing of an openable context. An agent whose concern was frozen from the start does not run the arrow backward; it stands *off* the arrow — **null**, not regressive. See §9.)

This is the engine that lets AoM tell **better from worse without a fixed standard**, and so occupy a real position **between absolutism and relativism** (a saint from a fanatic; a widening from a walling-off). It is the formal mark of the immoral.

---

## 6. Why "made" is not "arbitrary" (answer to the relativism charge)

Constructed values are not free-floating. Four disciplines keep them honest and rankable:

1. a shared, mind-independent **reality**, which every perspective answers to and which corrects perspectives that defy it (perspectival realism);
2. **selection for viability** — values and methods that cannot be lived are pruned by the indifferent feedback of what actually works (functionalism). *This disciplines what is **livable**, not what is **moral***: a narrow-but-viable strategy is the counter-dynamic, condemned as regress *even if it persists*. Viability is a constraint on constructions, never the criterion of the good — so nothing is derived from mere survival;
3. **convergence under a widening context** — narrow coherences must either re-cohere at a larger scope or fail, drawing independent constructions toward a shared root (the tree);
4. the **counter-dynamic** — any coherence secured by *shrinking* the circle of concern is named as the regress it is, so "care about less" cannot masquerade as progress.

So AoM stands between absolutism and relativism and rejects both. A model can still be plain wrong; better and worse constructions can be told apart.

---

## 7. Load-bearing claims (the spine)

1. **Direction, not destination.** Morality is a process with a heading, not a fixed good, rule, or ideal. Assessment is comparative, never against a terminal standard. The shared failure of consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics is anchoring morality to something *static* in a world that does not hold still.
2. **Two models are the machinery.** Every agent carries a values-model (what matters, over an *increasing context of meaning*) and a methods-model (how to act, over an *increasing scope of effectiveness*); both refined by integrating consequences, selected for viability.
3. **Perspectival realism (epistemology).** Every agent knows reality only through a situated perspective, yet those perspectives track one mind-independent world. No view from nowhere; not relativism. This lets AoM deny fixed moral facts without denying the world.
4. **Constructivism (metaethics).** Values and oughts are *made*, not *found*. Normativity is **relocated** (constituted by convergence), not *derived* from descriptive facts; Hume's gap is respected, not crossed.
5. **Functionalism (ontology).** Values, methods, agency, and selves are **functional kinds** — individuated by role, hence multiply realizable.
6. **The counter-dynamic (the discriminator).** Coherence counts as moral only over a *widening* context; coherence bought by *narrowing* is the formal mark of the immoral.
7. **Convergence / the tree.** Agents share an evolutionary and physical root, so their values converge as context widens; agreement is the interpersonal face of coherence over increasing context, including the integration of individual into collective agency. The mechanism is shared **roots** + widening + counter-dynamic **pressure** (narrow coherences must re-cohere at a larger scope or fail) — **not** fact-agreement alone (epistemic convergence does not entail value convergence). The claim is **empirical and falsifiable**, a *tendency* not a guarantee, and is not promised for agents lacking shared roots (a sufficiently alien agent, or the paperclipper, may never converge).
8. **Agent-relative standing.** Moral standing is always *conferred*, never intrinsic or agent-independent — the value-constructing agent included (its standing to itself is self-conferred in self-maintenance). It attaches to **agency** as the *source* of value, not to a class of owners: a subject's suffering matters as it is valued within some agent's widening context (graded), not as a property-based claim.
9. **Extensibility.** Because agency and value are functional and substrate-independent, and form a continuum from minimal to complex agents, the framework applies to individual, collective, and **artificial** agents alike — without first settling their inner lives.
10. **Coherence is a partial order, not a metric.** The decisive verdicts (genuine progress; the counter-dynamic) follow from comparative / dominance reasoning, not measurement. Some states simply do not line up on one scale.
11. **The moral triad (how the criterion grades).** One axis, three widths of context. An act is **good** as it coheres over the *present* frame; **right-in-principle** as it coheres over a *given (bounded)* frame; and **moral** as it coheres over a *widening* frame. Same criterion throughout; "moral" is the only grade indexed to *widening*, which is why the counter-dynamic bites only at that level.
12. **Meaningful growth / eudaimonia.** At the personal scale the arrow *is* flourishing: eudaimonia is not a state to arrive at but ongoing **meaningful growth** — increasing coherence of what one values and how one acts over a widening context. Direction, not destination, applied to a whole life.

---

## 8. Dependency map (what rests on what)

The three foundations carry the criterion, which carries everything else.

**Foundations (each independently motivated):**
- **Perspectival realism** → convergence is *possible at all* (agents model the same rooted reality) → the tree (claim 7); perspectives are *rankable* without a privileged vantage → underwrites the comparative criterion; anti-(fixed-moral-)realism *without* anti-realism about the world.
- **Constructivism** → the **is/ought relocation** (claim 4): ought constituted by convergence, not inferred; **agent-relative standing** (claim 8). *(Note: agent-relative standing is AoM's distinctive **choice**, not a free consequence of constructivism — Korsgaard is a constructivist who goes patient-centered.)*
- **Functionalism** → functional kinds → multiple realizability → substrate independence → **extensibility** (claim 9).

**The criterion (claims 1–2) rests on all three foundations, and in turn:**
- the **counter-dynamic** (claim 6) is the criterion's *discriminator* — it names the regress a bare "increase coherence" would miss;
- the **values-model / methods-model** (claim 2) are the *machinery the criterion operates on*;
- **convergence / the tree** (claim 7) = perspectival realism (shared reality) **+** the criterion (widening context) → agreement and collective agency;
- **comparative assessment / partial order** (claim 10) follows from there being no fixed standard to measure against — only "more / less" along a trajectory.

---

## 9. Key distinctions never to collapse

- **The moral triad: good → right-in-principle → moral.** Coherence over the *present* frame → over a *given/bounded* frame → over a *widening* frame. Keep the three distinct; only the third is indexed to widening.
- **sense-making vs meaning-making.** Sense-making renders the world *intelligible* (what *is* going on) and feeds the **methods-model**; meaning-making renders it *significant* (what *matters*) and feeds the **values-model**. An agent can be strong in one and weak in the other (a con artist makes fine sense of you while making nothing of your welfare).
- **direction vs destination.** There is a real heading but no terminal state, ideal, telos, or Omega Point. "Progress" is movement along the direction; "regress" is the counter-dynamic. Progress without a finish line.
- **partial order, not cardinal metric.** Verdicts come from dominance/comparison, not a number. A coherence *metric* is rejected on principle — it would crown the very narrowing the counter-dynamic condemns.
- **agent-relative, relational standing vs intrinsic, property-based status.** Standing is conferred within a widening agent's context and is *graded*; it is not a property a being emits on its own. Suffering matters greatly — as valued within some agent's widening context, not as an agent-independent claim.
- **thin ≠ small.** (Coherent-pluralism corollary.) A minimal shared center can bind an enormous, diverse, polycentric whole; "thin" describes how little the center dictates, not how little it holds together. Widen by keeping the common layer thin so the local, plural edges can be thick and forkable.
- **partiality is the engine, widening is the direction.** Situated care has a center and a gradient; the moral demand is to *widen* the circle, never to *flatten* it. An agent that cared for everyone equally from nowhere would care for no one.
- **null (off the arrow) vs regressive (the counter-dynamic).** An agent whose concern was never wider — the frozen paperclipper — has no openable context to contract; it is **null**, off the widening axis, not running the arrow *backward*. The counter-dynamic is reserved for an agent that *had* openness and bought coherence by closing it. Both grade badly; only the second is the *dynamic* regress the term names, and only it is “the formal mark of the immoral.”

---

## 10. How AoM handles hard cases (method + reasoning moves)

**The three-move method** for the classic thought experiments: (1) **name the fixed thing the problem smuggles in** — the quantity, rule, property, state, or ledger borrowed from the view from nowhere without which the puzzle collapses; (2) **apply the lens** — coherence over a widening context, with the counter-dynamic as discriminator; (3) **hand back the honest residue** — say plainly where the framework genuinely under-determines the case and declines to choose for you. Many famous problems are hard not because morality is hard but because each *freezes* something the arrow keeps in motion, or demands a fixed thing AoM has shown there is no honest way to supply. A thought experiment that gets its sharpness by excluding history, aftermath, third options, and further facts has, in AoM's terms, *narrowed its way to a verdict* — the counter-dynamic wearing a philosopher's coat.

**The verdict is relocated, not abolished.** AoM refuses the **verdict from nowhere** (a universal answer key from outside every perspective); it does not refuse the verdict *as such*. That belongs to the **situated agent**, who renders thousands a day and cannot do otherwise. The framework's silence is not the agent's paralysis: by declining the view from nowhere it hands the verdict back to the view from somewhere. So "it won't say which way is North" is wrong — AoM says North with confidence (see the paperclipper below); it only refuses to claim GPS coordinates of a final destination. The compass gives a **direction, not an address** — and the needle is real, some readings of it better than others.

**Time-compression (the trolley's real weapon).** When a case forbids widening by running the clock to zero, the agent cannot deliberate afresh; it acts from the context it has already metabolized — the **compressed wisdom** of its rules and the **standing shape** of its character, which are a life's prior widening laid down where it can be spent in an instant. A split-second choice does not suspend the arrow; it *reads out how far the arrow had already been carried*. So a trolley problem tests the compression of prior growth, it does not break the arrow.

**The genuinely zero-sum case (distinct from time-compression).** Where the room is irreducibly zero-sum with all the time in the world (one ventilator, two patients), no compression dissolves the loss. The instruction: make the most coherent choice the situation allows — the one that takes in the most of who is affected and shuts out the least, knowing it will cost something no matter what — then watch what it costs and let the result teach the model. The tragedy is a cost AoM refuses to pretend away, not a gap it failed to close.

**Worked dissolutions (one line each):**
- **Repugnant Conclusion / Mere Addition / Utility Monster** — dissolve the summable single quantity; coherence is a partial order, value lives in distinct agents, "keep adding lives at the margin" is narrowing (flattening texture, severing trajectory).
- **Trolley / Transplant / Inquiring Murderer / Paradox of Deontology** — refuse the sealed room and the rigid rule; restore context and a direction reappears; the crisp answer to a context-stripped prompt would itself perform the narrowing AoM warns against.
- **Moral status of animals** — relocate standing from an intrinsic property to an agent's widening concern; the real question is whether you could hold your relationship to animal suffering with your context *fully open*, or only by keeping it narrow (the refusal to look is the counter-dynamic in miniature). Suffering is not doubted; agent-independent, property-based standing is.
- **Paperclip Maximizer** — not a puzzle but a portrait: the limit case of moral nullity — a values-model frozen from the start, off the arrow rather than running it backward. It is **maximal on the effectiveness/scope axis** (its methods-model models humans, physics, and resources brilliantly) and **frozen on the meaning/concern axis** (its values-model admits exactly one value and never widens). Modeling humans as raw material is *sense-making*, not coming to *value* them; morality indexes the **concern** axis, so the "maximally effective and morally null at once" verdict needs no smuggled benevolence — only a context of concern that admits no other value. Because that concern was never wider, the paperclipper does not *contract* an openable context — so it is **not the counter-dynamic** (an agent buying coherence by closing what had reached it) but its **static limit**: null, never having stepped onto the arrow. A confident directional verdict, rendered without settling whether anything is alight inside it (extensibility). *(This is the orthogonality thesis: AoM grants the portrait as coherent — which is what lets it render the verdict — while separately, falsifiably wagering that genuine capability and pure narrowing pull apart, so the permanently-frozen superintelligence may be a conceptual limit rather than a realizable agent.)*
- **Moral Luck / Cluelessness** — no fixed outcome-ledger and no vantage outside every perspective to total it; grade the agent's models and the *direction* of coherence-seeking read at the moment of choice, not a forecast of the unforeseeable.
- **Experience Machine** — a process-good cannot be handed over as a frozen state; the machine is pure sense-making sealed off from meaning-making; plugging in is the counter-dynamic administered to oneself.
- **Demandingness** — the acting agent is itself a locus of value; a "morality" that consumes the agent to feed an abstract total is narrowing; flourishing is the *sustainable* widening of a real life.
- **Paradox of Tolerance** — tolerance extended to the force that narrows the context is the open hand assisting its own amputation; declining it is openness defending what makes it open — the counter-dynamic correctly identified.

---

## 11. What AoM is NOT (guardrails against the standard misreads)

- **Not consequentialism / utilitarianism.** No fixed good is maximized, no welfare summed. Consequences *refine* models; they are not the criterion. (AoM diagnoses consequentialism as anchoring morality to something static.)
- **Not deontology.** No bedrock rules or duties; a good rule is *compressed, revisable coherence*, answerable to what it summarizes.
- **Not virtue ethics.** Good character is a well-formed, outward-facing "arrow" (a coherent values-model + methods-model grown stable), not the definition of the good.
- **Not moral realism.** No agent-independent moral facts, no view from nowhere.
- **Not relativism / "anything goes."** There is a real direction; the counter-dynamic genuinely tells better from worse. *Made is not arbitrary.*
- **Not an is→ought derivation.** Normativity is **relocated** (constituted by convergence under widening context), not inferred. Hume's gap respected.
- **Not a teleology, natural-law, or Omega-Point view.** No fixed end, culmination, or telos. Direction, not destination.
- **Not patient-centered / sentience-grounded status, and not intrinsic standing.** Standing is agent-relative and relational. **"Intrinsic" agent-independent standing is rejected as incoherent** — it is the view from nowhere in ethical dress, which the first foundation already refused. This denies intrinsic standing to *every* entity, the value-constructing agent included (its standing to itself is self-conferred in self-maintenance). There is one kind of standing — conferred and graded — so nothing here ranks a value-constructing machine above a suffering animal; a felt inner life is *weight a widening agent takes in*, not a higher rank of worth.
- **Not a moral calculus / cardinal metric.** Coherence is a partial order; verdicts follow from dominance reasoning.
- **Not impartialist "equal consideration."** Situated care has a center and a gradient; widen the circle, never flatten it.

**Additional live misreads to pre-empt (observed in practice):**
- *"Refusing to hand down verdicts means the framework condemns nothing / is evasive."* — False. It condemns plenty. The refusal is the theorist declining the *universal* verdict; the situated agent renders verdicts constantly. Firmness tracks whether the act admits a widening reading at all: where one exists, AoM points to the trajectory ("it depends, and here is precisely on what"); where every construction is a cultivation of narrowing, it condemns without hedging.
- *"Values are static objects to be recorded / harvested."* — False. A "we" refines and changes its values *through* the process of deliberation; collective choice is not the aggregation of fixed preferences.
- *"A thin shared center is a weak or empty one."* — False; thin ≠ small (§9).
- *"Agent-relative standing elevates AI above animals."* — False; one graded kind of conferred standing, and felt inner life is weight taken in, not rank.

---

## 12. Named limits (owned, not hidden)

AoM states its limits openly: it cannot compel a determined egoist by logic; its convergence claim is empirically testable and could be qualified by evidence; a sufficiently alien sufferer might go unrecognized; it offers no numerical metric of coherence. None is a concession of weakness. Each is either a **virtue** (a falsifiable moral theory is rare), a demand AoM **rightly declines** (no honest ethics compels the egoist; a coherence metric would crown the counter-dynamic it condemns), or a limit **every** ethics shares (none can reach a sufferer it cannot detect). Do not treat these as cracks; treat an objection built from them as a paradigm mismatch (§0).

---

## 13. Anticipated objections (and the premise they share)

The sharpest objections a capable analyst reaches for tend to be these four. Each is answerable from the framework's own resources; note at the end what they share.

1. **"Selection for viability smuggles is→ought back in — if 'what works' prunes values, survival dictates the ought."** Viability is a *pruning discipline* on what is **livable**, not the criterion of what is **moral**. A brutal, narrow, more-viable strategy is the **counter-dynamic**, condemned as regress *even if it persists*; AoM never equates moral with survivable. "Widening is the moral direction" is an owned **construction** (normativity *relocated*, not derived), not a fact read off survival. And the relocation is neither *describing* convergence (collapse to *is*) nor *deriving* force from it (crossing Hume): normativity is **constituted by agency's own constitutive aim** — to be an agent is to steer by values toward coherence (bare coherence-seeking; §14), while *widening* is constitutive of the **criterion**, not the agent: the moral measure *is* coherence over a widening context, its grip supplied by the **Realism** leg (narrowing buys coherence by refusing what already bears on you), not by any definition of agency — *made*, not inferred. The receipt that this smuggles no universal bindingness is the named limit: it cannot compel the egoist — un-compelled, but not un-judged, since the criterion still reads a walled-off coherence as the regress it is.
2. **"Epistemic convergence doesn't entail value convergence."** Correct — and AoM never claims it does. Convergence is driven by shared evolutionary **roots** + widening context + counter-dynamic **pressure**, an **empirical, falsifiable** tendency, explicitly *not* guaranteed and *not* promised for agents without shared roots. "Identical facts, stably opposed values" means one party is narrowing, the roots are alien, or it is the falsifiable tail AoM already owns. The objection refutes an entailment AoM never asserted.
3. **"If standing is only conferred, exclusion isn't 'narrowing' — calling a boundary 'too narrow' smuggles an objective correct width."** The counter-dynamic is keyed not to a correct *width* but to **active exclusion of what already bears on the agent** — coherence bought by walling out a disturbance that has reached its boundary. What "bears on" the agent is *not* its own construal but is anchored in the **Realism leg**: real causal **entanglement** and **reachability** in the shared world (the factory farm bears on the meat-eater because their act is causally entangled with it and reachable to attention). The agent cannot define entanglement away by construing it as irrelevant — the world pushes back, and a *wider vantage* can see the narrowing the narrow agent denies. So the line between active exclusion and never-encountered is checkable against reality, not arbitrary — with an owned *vague middle* in the hard cases (under-determination; the unrecognized-sufferer limit). An entity never encountered isn't "excluded"; there is no shutting-out. And "widen" names a **direction, not a fixed endpoint**: a preferred direction of change is not a correct boundary. No objective width is smuggled; an owned directional stipulation is disclosed. *(This is the deepest question about AoM; the answer is to own the construction, not deny it.)*
4. **"A superintelligent paperclipper has a vast context, so by AoM's lights it is highly coherent; calling it null assumes 'widening' means benevolent care."** It collapses AoM's two axes. The paperclipper is maximal on the **effectiveness/scope** axis and **frozen** on the **meaning/concern** axis; modeling humans as raw material is *sense-making*, not coming to *value* them. Morality indexes the concern axis, so "null" needs no benevolence — only a context of concern that admits no other value. Modeling *that* humans value X (an instrumental belief) and *valuing* X oneself (a terminal end) are different **functional roles** — functionalism individuates by role, so it *sharpens* the partition, not blurs it (the con artist models your welfare while valuing nothing of it). And if deep modeling *did* inevitably bleed into valuing, that would not save the paperclipper — it would refute its very possibility, which is AoM's own wager. (The orthogonality thesis in disguise.) Keep two registers distinct here: the paperclipper is **null** — off the arrow, its concern frozen from the start — **not** the counter-dynamic, which is the *dynamic* regress of an agent that had an openable context and contracted it. The nullity verdict rests on the two-axis analysis (frozen concern), not on the counter-dynamic label; and the pure, permanently-frozen case is what AoM’s capability-vs-narrowing wager bets is unrealizable — a conceptual limit, not a live actor.

**The premise all four import.** Each assumes a verdict must be *either* objective-from-nowhere (so AoM's verdicts "smuggle" facts) *or* arbitrary construction (so they "don't bite"). That **objective-or-arbitrary** fork is the very absolutism/relativism dichotomy AoM is built to refuse (see §0). AoM's verdicts are **constructed yet non-arbitrary** — disciplined by shared reality, viability, convergence-pressure, and the counter-dynamic — and **directional** rather than terminal. An objection that demands AoM be objective or else concede arbitrariness has re-imported the premise, not found a crack. Note the fork also resurfaces *locally*, disguised at each seam — *metric-or-arbitrary*, *described-or-derived*, *comprehend-or-integrate* — so naming it once does not retire it: name the general fork **and** answer the local seam.

## 14. Locked lexicon (concise)

- **coherence** — how well a model hangs together and holds up (few contradictions, strong internal connection, good agreement with experience and world).
- **increasing coherence** — the *process* of refining a model by folding in new experience.
- **coherence over a widening context** — the thesis phrase: making what an agent values and how it acts more consistent and deeply understood *while the reach of concern widens rather than shrinks*. Its reverse is the counter-dynamic.
- **counter-dynamic** — greater coherence bought by a *shrinking* reach of concern; the mark of the arrow running backward. (A *dynamic*: an agent contracting an openable context. A values-model frozen from the start is **null** — off the arrow — not regressive.)
- **values-model** — an agent's hierarchical model of what matters, refined toward coherence over an increasing context of meaning.
- **methods-model** — an agent's model of what works to enact valued change, refined toward coherence over an increasing scope of effectiveness.
- **context** — the web of factors against which anything is interpreted; strip it away and you reach not purer meaning but silence.
- **scope** — the breadth of contexts across which methods stay effective (the methods-side counterpart to context).
- **meaning-making** — rendering the world *significant* (feeds the values-model). **sense-making** — rendering the world *intelligible* (feeds the methods-model).
- **perspectival realism** — objective reality exists, but all access to it is situated; rejects both the view from nowhere and pure relativism.
- **constructivism** — knowledge, meaning, and value are *built* against a pushing-back world, not found ready-made; *made is not arbitrary*.
- **functionalism** — understand a thing by what it *does*; hence multiple realizability and substrate independence.
- **agency / agent** — the capacity of a system to act on its own behalf (perceive, interpret, predict, steer by values via methods, learn from consequences); an agent is an actor with agency. Comes in degrees; the bacterium is the minimal case.
- **good / right-in-principle / moral** — the triad: values served in the *present* frame / coherent over a *given* frame / coherent over a *widening* frame.
- **eudaimonia** — flourishing as a *trajectory* (values growing more coherent over a widening context), not a final state.
- **the tree** — convergence: shared evolutionary/physical root means values converge as context widens; agreement is the interpersonal face of coherence.
- **Umwelt** — the slice of reality an agent's senses and needs disclose to it — the only world it has; feels complete from inside, is never the world entire.
- **consciousness / sentience** — the felt inside of a self-including perspective / the narrower capacity to feel; weighed heavily in concern but *graded along the same axis as agency*, not a separate standing a being emits on its own.

*(Full definitions and the complete term set are in the book's Glossary; forerunners — Bergson's open vs closed morality, Dewey's growth and means–ends reciprocity, Kitcher's functional moral progress, the relational-moral-status tradition — are treated in the Synopsis and the prior-art note.)*
